Do you know VRMS's Counselor?

Greetings to the Villa Rica Middle School family and friends.

I'm Octavia Sutherland, I'm thrilled to welcome you to the new academic year. It is my pleasure to serve you and your child in a variety of ways as the professional school counselor here at VRMS, with the goal of fostering their academic, social, and emotional development. I have the skills essential to help your child thanks to my broad educational history, and I will provide you all the support you need to ensure a balanced academic year.

I am a National Board Certified Counselor (NBCC), a Certified School Counselor, and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I am an alumnus of the University of Connecticut where I received my Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Services.  I earned my Master’s Degree in Community Counseling from Argosy University. My favorite color is yellow, and my birthday is June 10th. I enjoy reading, playing tennis, and spending time with my family and friends.

Counseling Action Plan

The Counseling Center's mission is to encourage and educate students, faculty, and parents to improve students’ academic and behavioral decisions in order to enhance their overall quality of living and learning.

The vision of The Counseling Center is to be the premier school counseling provider of inspirational and empowering programs and services that improve all students' academic and behavioral performance. We aim to do this by inspiring and teaching students’ skills for everyday living to be college, career, and life ready.

The Counseling Center's guiding principles include open and honest communication, shared accountability (amongst parents, students, the community, and the school), consistency, the value of setting a good example, and doing your best to be your best.

The Counseling Center's focus is to advance career development and to enhance the appropriate and healthy interactions of our students.

Counseling Services

My primary role as a professional school counselor focuses on the core curriculum. The delivery of this model will occur through advisement lessons and scheduled classroom lessons. The focus of these lessons will center on building and maintaining the “whole” child and assistance in reaching personal, academic, social/emotional and career goals. In cases where students require a more personal perspective, individual guidance will be available through a referral process completed by teachers, parents as well as the student themselves. Group guidance will also be provided for identified small groups of students on an as-needed basis.

Components of Counseling

  1. Core Curriculum
  2. Individual Guidance
  3. Group Guidance
  4. College and Career Readiness

    Individual Guidance
Seeks to assist the student in the art of problem-solving inside and outside of the classroom.

    Group Guidance
Provides resolution to groups of students who share a common bond or problem.  Students will work toward achieving a common goal together over a specified time period.
